Signs of Fall

Breeding pair of barn swallows had raised one clutch of 5 chicks in July in a nest they built in a garage door opener in the center bay of a 3 car garage. This was the 4th season that they had returned to the same exact garage opener. However, because the door was closed earlier in the season they did not have regular access to build their nest and were late in completing it. They only raised one clutch this season while in other years they had raised two -10 chicks total each summer.

After the chicks were fledged, the pair continued to fly in and out of the garage and were often roosting at night. However, I have not seen them for several days now and have not heard their chirping and twittering in the cherry tree. I wonder if they have migrated already.
