Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/20/2012

Number: 1

While walking through woods on a low maintanence roadway, near where a flowering buckwheat field and wooded acreage meet, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. I counted maybe 12-15 Monarchs flying high, very flighty, not pausing or roosting. This is an area I have successfully tagged monarchs at over the past three years. I found none roosting, and tagged none. Those I saw eventually went into the woods, but I never found any clumps hanging, or even one resting where I could net it. None have been seen on roads or in my yard for a couple weeks. Very little young milkweed observed anywhere, and no caterpillars seen on this date. August 16-25 has been prime time for tagging in my area for many years. Are they late, have they already passed here, or are the numbers really way down? Any feedback from other observers will be welcome.
