The hummers showed up quite late this year, likely due to the drought, but now we are seeing them at the feeders and the butterfly bush from early morning until about 7 in the evening--That seems to be the time for agressive behavior between one dominant male, who has decided he owns the lilac bushes and the butterfly bush, along with BOTH feeders. At that time, noone has much of an opportunity to feed.
I have noted that they seem to be a bit camera shy this year. Last year, i was able to take some good photos of them on the feeders, from less than a yard away. Now, at that distance, they seem rather shy, and will light on branches rather than feed. If i leave, they go immediately to the feeders. It has been puzzling, for sure. Monarchs showing up at the butterfly bush, which is about 15 feet high.
