Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/25/2012

Number: 30

Iowa has had little rain this season and flower bloom has not been as abundant. Because of this, the hummingbirds are swarming the feeders for food. I have 15 feeders on my habitat property and am cleaning and filling them daily! I make sure not to fill them too full because I prefer to clean them out each evening when their feeding has subsided for the day. All are ruby throated species both male and female adult and juvinile. They have also been feeding on my trumpet vine blooms. I have spaced the feeders at various locations to help prevent territorial behavior and fighting over the necter, but there are so many they still battle. They are not frightened by my presence when tending to the feeders, and often will come up and "hover" right in front of my face!
