Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/24/2012

Number: 9

Today, I have had to refill the two 1qt feeders again only 24 hrs after the last refill. We have had swarms of adult females topping off in preperation, the two juvenile females from the local breeding pair have been hiding in the Oak. The resident female has had active mid-air dog fights with two of the traveling females. All told it appears that there are 5 to 7 adult females today, plus the two juveniles and the resident male trying to defend the Cherry tree feeder.

To try to insure the juveniles have sufficient resources I added a small single feeder near the Oak at the seed feeding station. With this site apparently becoming a way-station, it is becoming obvious I will need to establish two more separate feeding stations to insure both the traveling and resident groups are getting the resources necessary to make the long flight South. I am hoping I can delay their trip for a few days to allow them to miss the worst of the Tropical Storms. As the Male has not departed yet is a hopeful sign...
