This was in my backyard, last night (8/27) and they were flying around seemingly at random. I have seen roosts of 100s there previously (Sept 5, 2010) and there were only about 25 monarchs there last night but weather is similar: cool at night (13 degrees), clear, winds N17Km/hr. I live about 100m from Lake Ontario so I suspect they're waiting for good weather to make the crossing. This morning (8/28/12) there are about 10 back there. Maybe more will be back tonight?
September 4 Update
Since August 27th I have had 10-15 monarchs every
night and morning. Today, however, the remains of hurricane Issac passed
over the area and its raining and windy so clearly no butterflies. Let's
hope they are back when the weather clears up.
I live very close (about 100 metres) to Lake Ontario and there are islands
between here and the US. So I suspect this is a good place to cross the
lake, particularly if the wind is blowing in the right direction. I think
this is why I'm lucky enough to have so many visitors.
