I drove to Cobourg today via the lakeshore. On the gravel sections of road there were dozens of Monarchs sitting on the road, presumably collecting nutrients/salts from the gravel which appeared to have had dust-suppressant (calcium chloride?) added recently. At the Wicklow Beach Boat launch parking area alone there were around 100!
I have never seen Monarchs puddling in large numbers before. Puddling might not be the best term as there was no standing water anywhere though it did rain lightly yesterday. In any case this was the first sign of decent migration Ive seen yet this year.
