Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 08/29/2012

Number: 1

Collected eggs and larva this weekend to rear and tag.. I have approximately 30 caterpillars in several butterfly houses, in all different stages of the cycle. When I checked this morning there were at least 4 that have cacooned and 3 or 4 that are in the "J" formation. All of the caterpillars were found on my swamp milkweed (ice ballet or cinderella) vs the common milkweed (found some on the side of the road last year and replanted in my yead). Saturday when I was collecting there was a female laying more eggs. I hope to rear at least 50 to cover the tags I ordered.. I have to keep a watchful eye for this very large praying mantis that likes to eat butterflies. This is turning out to be a good year, last year I did not reach my 50 mark.
