Monarch Adult Sighted

Finally, some migrating monarchs in the Oshawa area! We began the day watching about 20 monarchs flutter through our yard (and way station), some stopping to nectar briefly on buddleia, New England asters, zinnias, or goldenrod, before continuing their flight in a SW direction. Hoping that this might reflect what was happening at the Lynde Shores Conservation area, we drove there (noticing many monarchs flying SW across the 401 as we traveled) only to find the same lack of any significant presence of nectaring monarchs which we experienced earlier in the week at this site.

However, as we returned eastward along the lake, we discovered numerous monarchs nectaring mostly on goldenrod in a field just south of a strip mall in Whitby. We also were able to capture, tag and release some near the east end of Darlington Park near the GM office building in Oshawa. So, 38 tagged today . . . the migration has begun west of Cobourg.
