Number: 7

Migration started in RI

I was at the beach in Misquamicut today and was amazed at the number of Monarchs passing toward the west. At one point I counted 7 in one minute and each time I looked up from my book, I could spot at least one or two! They seemed to be coming out from the ocean (we can see Block Island from our beach). They would come over us and back toward the cottages, so I don't think they were just following the coastline. Could they have been coming from Block Island? Wherever they came from, it was very comforting to see so many and still amazed at what they were about to do! I released one from our cottage yesterday, and have seven more chrysalids, and four more caterpillars. While getting milkweed last night for them, I found another egg on 2" milkweed from a patch that had been recently mowed. I've been raising them for about 36 years, and it never ceases to amaze me!
