Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/25/2012

Number: 29

On August 24th I wrote about the dismal success that my wife and I had tagging in Shawano, Wisconsin (4 monarchs in 3 hours). We spent 5 hours on August 25th and tagged 29. It was very hard finding a field that had alfalfa in it that had not been cut or a field where we could get permission to tag. We still had 49 tags to go and did not see much chance of using them up.

Then on the 27th we found a field of clover that we tagged 26 in. We went out on the 28th in the same field and finished up our tags. When we left there were many more monarchs left to tag. So what started out as being a bad year actually turned out to be pretty good. On a side note, several teachers in my school have been out searching for caterpillars to bring into the classroom and have not had any success. Our summer was hot and dry and much of the milkweed is not in good shape. I still have 18 tags left for my students to tag the butterflies that we raise in the classroom so searching for caterpillars will be on the agenda this weekend.
