Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/29/2012

Number: 110

We live on a hilltop in the hills of the finger lakes on the highest elevation in Yates County. We have only noted one other migration about 20 years ago and have lived here since 1970. The previous overnight roost was huge, covering our entire yard and included many thousand Monarchs roosting in every tree after fluttering in the yard in the late afternoon. It was a magical day, Monarchs flying all around us and at times landing on us. This small roost included just a few branches in 2 treetops. It had been a warm sunny day yesterday with a high of about 80 degrees F and at 6am today 8/30 it was 52 degrees with almost no breeze. The group left midmorning. Weather conditions were similar to the previous sighting 20 years ago
