In early June our area began experiencing day after day of relentless sun, extreme heat and no rain. Although I continued to refresh my nectar feeders every couple of days, I saw no hummingbird activity since the first spring rush north. Can't say I blame them. I was hiding from the heat, too. Then, on July 30th I observed a hummingbird checking out a fake red Japanese Lantern plant I had woven through the trellis on my patio near one of my nectar feeders. That lone hummer was apparently just passing through. I did not see any more hummingbird activity until August 7th. A male and a female began visiting one of my patio nectar feeders. Began to look like rain was on the way, along with cooler temperatures (under 100). Rain did arrive, finally, and cooler temps. However, hummer activity at my feeders was spotty, at best until August 21st. Now I am seeing hummingbirds at 6:30am and throughout the day, into late evening. I will keep my nectar feeders up until the first good hard freeze in late October. I hope the hummingbirds all have a safe journey south, and I hope they will remember to visit my garden again next spring.
