Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 08/29/2012

Number: 1

The dominating female allowed a male to feed off and on for a couple of hours. Haven't seen him since. She's taken up sitting like a sentry on the top of the shepherd's hook that holds the feeder, fiercely fighting off any other interlopers. Yesterday, another (either female or young male) landed on the feeder--she hopped onto its back, flailing her wings and pecking it with her beak. She rode the other bird all the way to the ground and continued the beatdown. I feared the other bird was hurt, maybe even dead. But, it flew away and the "queen" took her position back on the shepherd's hook. Have spotted at least 3 hummingbirds fighting around the feeder in the front yard, but haven't seen one perch and drink. They seem to keep fighting each other off to no one's benefit.
