Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/30/2012

Number: 4

Three ruby hummers had been feeding at our feeder and petunias for the month of JULY AND August. Two seemed smaller at first and we watched them fill out and grow. Then one got a tiny red spot on his throat but not the full ruby throat. We watched as they grew and two tried to become territorial over the feeder. But this Thursday one kept buzzing extremely close to me as I sat in my usual chair and seeming looking in my eyes.It was hard for me to keep still. Then the next day FRIDAY none of the three appeared at the feeder. ?Do hummers say goodbye???What was all the buzzing and flying close about me about on Thursday? Since none of the three came to feed or sit on their favored perches in the persimmon tree,we assumed that the three have begun their migration SOUTH --probably early this a.m..
Late Friday I believe we had a visiting migrant adult male who seemed skittish as he approached the hanging basket of red petunias but fed anyway. I believe he came back to feed early Sat but was not seen late Sat. weather -Friday was a hot 95 humid 95 degree day not windy and Sat is 82 and cloudy. we are expecting rainy thunder scattered showers as the remnants of tropical storm ISAAC approach.winds out of the NW at 10 mph.
