Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/03/2012

Number: 1

It seems that only one bird is now coming to my feeder, either a female or an immature male. I've seen him/her for the last several days feeding a lot. It is a very pugnacious specimen, taking on 3 chickadees and common yellowthroat, all of which took refuge in the interior of shrubs, only to be followed vigorously by the hummingbird which continued to pursue them and chased them out so that they had to fly away further. The hummingbird also stopped to look at an immature male rose-breasted grosbeak that was quietly feeding on berries, but must have decided that it was too big for him/her, so he/she didn't try anything. The pugnacious nature of this bird makes me think it is a juvenile male testing out for next year's mating season.
