Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/31/2012

Number: 1

While Don Davis and others are tagging the beginning of the main monarch migration, the leading edge of the "premigration migration" just reached Phoenix. Large, bright colored male monarch flew in my yard yesterday at 4:50 p.m. and promptly started shoving out the local queen population that's been camped out here this summer.

Our usual date for this first appearance is September 1, so we are seeing them just a few days early. We've had great monsoon rains this summer over all and their are abundant nectar sources leading them in.
