Signs of Fall

Date: 09/06/2012

Number: 1

At least a dozen bluebirds have been sharing a large puddle in our driveway (I keep it filled with water!) with 3 flickers, 5 mourning doves, one robin, and many goldfinches. Today a pair of rose-breasted grosbeaks (teenagers) were enjoying sunflower seeds along with the chickadees, finches, and nuthatch. Yesterday two catbirds were looking for jelly - sorry, guys, we ran out! - and sat in a nearby dogwood for an hour waiting..... to no avail. We can hear sandhill cranes daily - our 20' Crimson King maple has dropped most of its leaves in the past week - no color change - hope this doesn't mean it's dying. Goldenrod is beautiful and very plentiful this fall - it must like dry soil!
