Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/09/2012

Number: 5

As of 10 a.m. today, I have seen 5 female ruby throat hummingbirds at my feeders. Female sightings have been pretty consistent the last few days, although the males apparently left sometime last week. This year brought a much higher number of birds than in the past 2 years. During July and August, we constantly had birds coming and going, with 2 (and sometimes 3) engaging in airborne battles. They also seem to be leaving earlier this year. Last year, my last sighting was on October 1st, with a good traffic flow up to about the last week of September. If I'm down to just a few females in the first week of September, the migration is already winding down. Wonder what that says about the upcoming winter?
