I have a report by the AuSable Valley Audubon that a very large number of monarchs are roosting at Tawas Point State Park, East Tawas, MI., which is 40 miles south of Harrisville, MI.
I contacted Ed Cole of the AuSable Valley Audubon that
helps tagging monarchs. He estimated 400 roosting on both Sunday and
Monday (9 & 10 Sept). The first roosting (6:45 to 7:30 PM) occured right
at the point with a light SW wind. But on the next evening (6:30 to 7:15
PM) they were 1/2 mile from the point and more scattered with stronger
wind from the SE. Maybe this was the same monarchs from the previous
night? Again the estimate was 400. The point is 1 mile long and has a
two track road down the middle. It has mostly low vegetation of small
trees, pines, shrub. Sorry no photo. 13 monarchs were tagged for both
days.
