On the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, 21 monarchs were counted in the fields of Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in the late morning. On the previous day, Sept. 10, the count was 23 in one-half hour of observations. The comparative elements of monarch movement from year to year are one part of understanding the overall population. In the fall of 2010 on Sept. 11, we witnessed the largest single-day numbers ever at Neal Smith--3085 monarchs, truly a sight to behold.
