I'm a little late reporting this, but on this past Sunday, September 9, I think I witnessed the monarchs migrating twice! In our back field I noticed that there were many more monarchs than usual, and as I stood counting them I became aware that more were flying over my head in a southwest direction. I counted at least a dozen, most didn't stop to nectar but just kept on flying high above my head. Later in the afternoon my husband and I went to Bristol Harbor, a restaurant that overlooks Canandaigua Lake, one of the fingerlakes of NY. On the terrace I became aware of a steady flow of monarchs all heading in a southwesterly direction. I walked outside and counted about four a minute for at least fifteen minutes. Soon I was joined by others who were witnessing the butterflies as well. I pointed them out to one woman and she said yes...they're on their way to Mexico....so I was not alone in my awareness of the event. What a perfect day!
