Haines is on a peninsula and we have summer salmon runs on both sides (the Chilkoot and the Chilkat sides, named by the Tlingit people for the rivers that run on either side). The late salmon run is on the Chilkat side only.
Today we counted 22 eagles on the Chilkoot side and 26 on the Chilkat side. Citizen scientist volunteers keep an eagle count each week. Many citizen scientists come from the Haines high school, like these 2 ninth-graders. This year's eaglets are still in the nest, but will fledge soon to join the other eagles feeding on salmon.
Right now we have only our year-round resident eagles feasting on the salmon. Most of our resident eagles are near their nest sites until the young ones fledge. Then they will all begin to converge on the river's edge to feed. When the more southern salmon runs finish in October, the eagles from those places will begin to migrate north to the Chilkat for the late salmon run.
