A dozen monarchs were feeding hungrily all day today on the red clover in the meadow. Tonight I watched at least a dozen monarchs as they settled in for the night. Each flew around the treetops singly and seemed to take forever to select a place to land. Ultimately a little after sunset a group of 10 were close together toward the tip of a branch of the black walnut tree, but they were not tightly clustered. They did not seem to flash their wings to attract nearby butterflies; they only flashed when a new monarch began to land. It looked as if the monarch already at rest was showing its wingspan to claim the necessary space. (I'm not reporting this as a roost because I haven't been at this location for a week, so can't claim to know when monarchs roosted here first.)
