The leading edge of the migration reached Lawrence, KS on the afternoon of 9 September - right on time. The leading edge of the migration usually reaches this latitude when the altitude angle (sun
angle) is between 57 and 56 or from the 9th to the 11th of September.
There are years when the arrival is delayed by strong winds from the SW and high temperatures but not this year. A shift in the wind direction, and a drop in temperatures, that began late on Friday resulted in NW winds on Sat and N on Sunday and temperatures that were perfect for migrating monarchs. Today is a different story with strong winds from the SW and S. These head winds range from 10-25mph over the area north of us so I do not expect large numbers of additional monarchs to reach Lawrence by the end of the day.
