Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/13/2012

Number: 4

Saw four females at feeders before 11 a.m. A male Ruby that has been hanging around did a few dives on them. One of the females flew toward the north after feeding. I have increased the concentration on one of five feeders to 50% by volume. The other four feeders are at 37%. I have always thought that a 20% solution matched natural nectar, but a female ornithologist on that hummingbird Nova special recommended a 1-to-1 ratio of sugar to water.

Very few yellojackets and no bald-faced hornets. Frost warning are out for tomorrow.
I had a large nest of yellojackets in the woodshed about thirty feet away from the feeders, but I kept them under control by setting up my industrial vacuum at the hive entrance for a few hours every few days. Sucked up over 700 of the pests!
