While I'm located in Des Moines, Iowa, I have made 4 trips to Rock Island, Illinois, Muscatine, Iowa and several other Mississippi River areas in the last 3 weeks.

For the first time in my memory, I have not seen one monarch crossing I80 during my drive from Des Moines east to the Mississippi. In 4 trips over 3 weeks. Yesterday (9/12) I did see two monarchs in north Des Moines but only one was flying southward. The other seemed to be meandering westward. I thought for sure the monarchs would use the Mississippi River. They have many times in the past. But not this year.
