I have 4 feeders set out around the yard. About 4 to 7 hummers have been flying around all of them for about a week. It looks as though they are almost all juveniles or females. Earlier in the week we saw one ruby throated male at a feeder. They are in stiff competition to establish territorial rights to the feeders, zinging all around after one another, posturing for position or rights and what seems to be attacking any of the others who fly close to them. It seems this constant competitive activity is a waste of energy and the hummers would instinctively cut back on this energy-draining flight and get themselves ready for the continuation of their migration.
