At least 25 of 38 monarchs noted today during a morning visit to Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge were found flying in and out of oak trees in the savanna area. In past years, the oak trees on a hillside adjoining the prairie have harbored roosts of monarchs for overnight stays. Today the monarchs were nectaring on goldenrod and other wildflowers in the area. The day was sunny with a mild breeze from the south.
