Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/15/2012

Number: 5400

A weather front went through earlier today with a gusty wind switching to the North. Temp 75F. When the sun came out around 3:00 PM there were thousands of butterflies flying at twice tree-top level with many much higher. Monarchs could be spotted far up in the sky with binoculars. They were all gliding along the lake shore in a SW direction toward Pt Pelee where they cross Lake Erie to Ohio. I counted 30 per minute flying overhead which continued for three hours (6:30 PM). The weather conditions were perfect because the north wind aids their flight as well as funnels them along the lake on their journey to Pt Pelee, Canada's most southerly location.
