Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/17/2012

Number: 79

To date, have released 79 butterflies (37 females, 39 males and 3 unknown as to sex due to friend releasing)raised from eggs and small larvae. Large larvae that have been harvested from the wild to raise to adult state have been victims of tachnid flies laying eggs in the caterpillars as hosts. The tachinid larvae have emerged from the caterpillars in the "J" state or from the chrysalis. This has been a large ratio of approximately 75%. Noticed that milkweed is dying off as well. Approximately 20 just hatched larvae was given to Georgian Court University and should have emerged as adults by today or tommorrow and released. Will follow up on this and the 11 chysalis that I still have which should be emerging within the next 10 to 12 days.
