Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/10/2012

Number: 2

I was visiting Assateague Island National Seashore for several days early last week, as I do every September. After the first two (butterfly-less) days, the winds shifted from their sustained southerly direction (most likely due to Tropical Storm Leslie approaching Bermuda) to a north-north-westerly one, finally bringing some migrating monarchs 'down'. While walking along the surfline, both my husband and I noticed a twosome of female monarchs fly past us, coming in east off the Atlantic ocean! Both immediately dropped, exhausted, onto the damp sand a bit up-beach, and proceeded to 'puddle' for moisture replenishment with their proboscises.
