I was devastated early last week to discover that the large field of red clover that had provided a large, rich source of nutriment for our Fluttery Friends for some time, had been mowed.
So I tried another place, an overgrown, abandoned pasture nearby, that had been a fruitful place for sightings in past years
... and found a Sweet Spot -- an open area providing a migration corridor, and rich in autumn asters just coming into bloom. The Monarchs were POURING through this corridor, filling up on nectar, and then continuing their astonishing flight south ... I find this so moving, so heroic.
