Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/16/2012

Number: 200

On a whale watch trip... first saw hundreds of Monarchs gathered along the shore road between Rye and the next town (about 4 miles). Then while on the whale watch boat on both the 15th and 16th at least 50 (over several hours)fluttered around us even when we were 10 miles off shore... headed predominately south .

It took your breath away to see these tiny brilliant orange fluttering beings way off shore with land just out of sight. Some would flutter around the boat as if to land but then flake off behind us. A winded red-breasted nuthatch did take a break on the boat, but I don't think of them as migrators so wonder what it was up to.
