Observation point is 3rd story deck facing southern NC coastline. Monarch Butterflies are flying westerly, parallel to coast and between the dunes (100ft away) and the building where I am. Observation was made beginning at 1:50 PM EST. Temp. Is 80 degrees with overcast skies.
I am positive they were monarchs. I am a volunteer at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Among other things I taught life cycles including that of the monarch. These were monarchs. The ones near enough to inspect did not have the two spots common to males. I did see a few other " mimics" but did not count them.
