Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/18/2012

Number: 50

We had a very windy day and we had 50+ adult monarchs resting in our loblolly trees waiting out the weather. Really neat site and got a couple of good representative pictures.

I am on the Chesapeake Bay (well close - actually the Chester River and Jackson Creek) the map coordinates (of the trees!) are: lat= 38.968035 and long=-76.224979

Time of Day:
~5:00 the pics were taken, they had been coming in for an hour or so before that.

Weather:
definitely a factor - overcast and quite windy (15-25mph all day)from the SSW all day (western shore of MD had big rainstorms, that we got a little bit of rain from right after I took the pictures) temperature, don't have any data handy, but I was out there in shorts and light t-shirt and was slightly chilled - maybe low 70's or high 60's?

I do not know that they spent the night and either way the next day they were gone when we checked. From the conditions at the time I wouldn't be surprised if they did spend the night though.

This has happened before, not every year, but at least a couple of times. We do seem to be in a fly way for them and our lot has a large population of bacceris bush that they seem to like to nectar from. It is neat that they take advantage of the trees and it makes me love the trees more!
