Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/19/2012

Number: 1000

Probably 1000 adult monarchs congregated in trees and late summer flowers at oceanside trail.

It was amazing to see them all! I was walking in an ocean-side park called Fort Foster. This is directly on the Atlantic Ocean, not on an inlet or bay, etc. I saw the large group on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 4:15 PM. The air was very clear and the temperature was about 65 F. I think there was a light wind, but the area where the monarchs were congregated was protected from wind and was calm. I met some other people that day who said there was also a large congregation of them about 1/4 mile further along the path in another sheltered area, but I did not find them.

A friend told me they were also there (hundreds) on Saturday, September 15, 2012. I went to the same area today, September 23rd at 5 PM, and saw perhaps 400 in the very same sheltered trees. Temperature today was about 63 F, sunny, very clear air with low humidity, very light wind off the ocean.

I walked on Thursday, September 20th, and saw perhaps only 3. It was early afternoon that day.

On Wednesday the 19th, a friend told me he had seen a large number in an area at York Beach, Maine, which is about 5 miles along the coast North of here.

I saw a large congregation of Monarchs at Fort Foster park several years ago, but I can't remember exactly when. I mention this because I've heard they have been passing through here for many years, at least some years!
