Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/19/2012

Number: 1500

A day after the NYC and Long Island experienced tornado warnings with high winds up to 70 mph and teaming rain, a beautiful sunny day was upon us with temps in the mid 70's and a NW wind. The monarchs continued their journey. I spotted about 1500 in an hour at Robert Moses Beach, settling into their roosts for the night. It is amazing to watch them settle into select pine trees, and how they interact with each other. Although many branchs on the trees are empty, they have to snuggle in among the masses. Similar to the previous days they were champeroned by dragonflies and various other butterflies.
Once again it was breathtaking to watch them elegantly dance overhead crossing the sand dunes, pine trees and the road. This is truly a dream come true.
