Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/12/2012

Number: 12

Observations from Sept 11 through Sept 18. I had only 4 monarchs in my garden on Sept 11th through Sept 12. They left on the 12th. No sightings since. However, I have surveyed other Monarch Enthusiasts and had reports of Monarchs in larger numbers nearer Two Rivers and Manitowoc on Sept 12th along the Lakeshore. The largest sighting was 12 monarchs nectaring in a field south of Two Rivers on Sept 12th. There were only 6 monarchs in directional flight spotted by another associate in Manitowoc. Other observers reported only 1 or none during the week. Another friend of mine mentioned that on Labor Day weekend he witnessed a number of monarchs that had washed up on the beach in Two Rivers. I drove along the lakeshore during the week and found only 1 or 2 monarchs on various occasions. However on Sept 18, I spotted 4 monarchs along the 5 mile stretch between Two Rivers and Manitowoc. In better years, I would be able to count between 50 and 100 while driving those same 5 miles. The weather really messed things up this year.
