The 2 adult monarchs that I saw today flying down the Mississippi were 2 of maybe 10 adults that I've seen all summer. I sincerely hope that this isn't an indication of the monarch population nation-wide this year :( We're very worried in the midwest....
I'm an elementary teacher and have raised monarch caterpillars every summer for 18 years. Each summer I have between 25-50 caterpillars that we release as butterflies from the milkweed patch in town at my house and the patch in my horse pasture at my parents' home. This summer we found NO eggs and NO caterpillars during the June season and during the fall season when we usually see more than we can possibly bring in and raise. I really couldn't believe it!
