Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/21/2012

Number: 20

On Sept 05, 2012 I saw an increase in the number of humming birds at my feeder, on the 6th there were more and on the 8th I saw 15 to 20 and have had that numbered regularly since. after a week I read the Hainsworth and Wolf article on line about the sugar content of nectars which suggested that stronger sugar water in the feeder was ok and that it might decrease the numbers at the feeder. I had been using 1 cup sugar to 3 cups of water. I changed to 2 cups of sugar to 4 cups of water on about the 14th. It has not changed the amount they are drinking. I have one feeder which has ten feeding places (holes) and am using about 40 ozs. of sugar water a day. My feeder holds 16 ozs. and I fill it two or three times a day. I have smaller numbers in middle of day but there are always some there. This morning bwtween 10 and 11, while resting, while I was mowing the lawn I had sat on my patio and counted 20 birds. 10 - 12 were in or around the feeder and the others were either perching in the yard or attempting to nectar on the roses.
