Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 09/20/2012

Number: 17

17 Monarchs emerged from chrysalis today, 7 in the morning, 4 at 1pm, 6 more at 5pm. All were released in my backyard, from whence they were gathered as eggs or young caterpillars. 15 males, 2 females.
Again this year, the majority of Monarchs we raised and released were males.
Using clear plastic shoeboxes with a large part of the lid cut out and replaced with screening has been very successful for raising the eggs and cats. When they emerge, dry, then climb up the empty chryalis to the screening at the top of the box, we move them to the purchased butterfly enclosure for release.
