Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/23/2012

Number: 1

I always see at least a couple monarchs in our yard along with other species, not necessarily together. This past week has been the date for migration through this area and I have not seen any monarchs. We have been in drought mode for several months and the autumn flowers are not coming on as well as most years. The insects have moved down out of the dead trees and the woodpeckers are not hammering to find them in their favorite spots. There has been light rain but the leaves started falling in July. Short wind storms come along and blow the dead leaves out of the trees and it is summer again for a while. I can only assume this is affecting the butterflies as well. I have been watering the flowers hoping to provide some nectar, but realize that the wild plants around us here in the country are what they rely on most.
