Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/23/2012

Number: 2500

Monarch numbers built up over the course of the day, with the heaviest migration in the afternoon. Members of the Monarch Monitoring Project found 4 roosts in Cape May Point totaling 2,500 monarchs. Many monarchs were still coming in to roost as late as 6:30pm. The roosts were made up of small clusters anywhere from 20 - 100 butterflies on English Ivy (which is in bloom now) and deciduous trees.

The previous night 9/22/12 one small roost of approx. 60 monarchs was found.
