Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/23/2012

Number: 100

Yesterday started out to be a slow morning for monarchs but as the day continued with North winds the monarchs began arriving in numbers. The best time for observation was from 2 - 6 pm. Observers counted approximately 60 per 5 minutes flying down the dunes. In any binocular view on the dunes one could see at least 30 butterflies at a time!! It's always sooo good to see them back in Cape May!!!! The numbers kept increasing during the afternoon hours with the butterflies coming in off the dunes to nectar in gardens (as our goldenrod isn't in bloom yet) and to roast for the night. We can't wait to see what today brings with more north winds ((-:
