Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/23/2012

Number: 10

The past 2 days have brought lots of hummingbirds, so my estimate of 10 might be low. They have been coming and going almost non-stop. We had our first frost advisory last night, so perhaps they were fattening up for the early cold weather (37 this morning).

I have seen mostly females, but a few of the birds seemed to be juvenile males (bright green iridescent feathers, but no red throat as the adult males have). Since the previous few days had brought only a few hummingbirds here and there, I'm thinking this latest influx might be a migrant population.

I warmed up the nectar this morning so the birds could warm themselves after the cold fall night. I'll continue to do that as long as I keep seeing them.
