This the third week of September has witnessed the arrival of Monarch butterflies. I have seen two or three during late summer but suddenly on Monday (9/17/12), they began showing up. Now I see them as I drive about the county. The numbers are not large yet, perhaps 20 per day spread along Hyway 24 and Hyway 70. Saw a few dead ones in the road as well.
Cloudless sulphurs are still plentiful, but now the Gulf Frits outnumber them. I regularly see 5 to 6 Coudless during the day in my yard but more than a dozen Gulf Frits can be counted at any time.
