Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/11/2012

Number: 1

Our Bookbaggers group worked in our butterfly garden/outdoor classroom at our library today. We learned about the 4 stages of a butterfly's life, how to identify different types of milkweed and other weeds, and the difference between plants that are annual and perennial.

We weeded and watered our garden, planted some fall annuals for color and looked for evidence of Monarchs in our garden. We found one egg and five larva on our milkweed. We brought the larva inside to our mini-observatory and put them on milkweed. We also saw lots of chewed leaves on our milkweed plants.

PS After the class had ended and we were tidying up, one of our bookbaggers discovered our first chrysalis hanging on the fence!
