Montclair Hawk Lookout, Montclair, NJ
The hawk watch in Montclair had a massive movement of monarch butterflies from 4:00 in the afternoon until about 6:00. Unfortunately, my wife Diane and I were not there to witness it, but the counter, Joe, and another "regular", Ray , tried to count them. Joe and Ray's best estimate of the number is between three and five thousand in a couple of hours.
Never in the long history of this second oldest regularly staffed hawk watch has anything like this been seen. Must have been amazing to see.
Joe and Ray say there were monarchs everywhere they looked for that late afternoon period.
