Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/16/2012

Number: 300

While carrying my net through a large field of abundant Canada goldenrod, along with thistle, boneset, and New England aster on the warm afternoon of Sunday, September 16 between 12:00 and 2:00 I watched in wonder the diverse insect communities. Lepidopterans present were black swallowtails, Common Buckeyes, American Painted Ladies and many migrating Monarchs. I counted 10 at a quick glance at any one time in my close surroundings and hundreds in a couple acres. Also darting around the field were several species of migrating dragonflies. I've learned recently there are 12 species that migrate in Ohio. To my surprise I saw a Green Darner snatch a Monarch in flight and carried it away! This field, one that Sarah Dalton and I meet yearly, seems to be a favorite for migrating Monarchs and this year it seems the number of migrators are good.
